The Sweden 340 has long been a members favorite, and with good reason. Widely regarded as one of the finest yacht builders, and featured in Fernec Mate’s book, ‘The Worlds Best Sailing Yachts,” the Sweden 340 combines a modern hull shape with a stunning profile, teak decks, and a superb fine yacht interior with lots of varnished mahogany and no exposed fiberglass.   Built by Swedish craftsmen on a small island in Sweden, she is very much a high end yacht. Her cockpit is on the small side, but the very spacious interior and excellent sailing performance more than make up for it.  We replaced the diesel in 2013, and have constantly upgraded her systems with a new headsail in 2020.

The V berth forward is on the small side and a bit high up, but more than workable for a couple, or a couple of kids.  Next is the head, with access doors from both the V berth and main salon.  The main salon and galley are very spacious, and the beautiful varnished mahogany woodwork looks as if it just came out of the yard.  She has a large owners cabin aft, with a berth that is over 5′ wide and 6’6″ long.  There also is a small settee in the aft cabin, and lots of hanging locker and cabinet space.

New to the fleet in 2012, the 1987 Contest 36 is, like the Sweden 340, the product of a very highly regarded European (in this case Dutch) shipyard. Martin and his father before him was the importer of Contest Yachts from 1962 to 1994, and so have a very long association with this yard, which still is producing amazing, semi custom yachts.  The 36s was the last higher volume production boat from Contest, and she offers a modern hull design and a surprisingly large rig. With an advanced wing keel, she can moor in more places than most yachts (ie Great Salt Pond)!

She has a huge cockpit, with lots of deck space for sunbathing, but also offers a very spacious interior with far more storage than any other boat in our fleet, making her perfect for longer cruises to Block Island or beyond. The quality of the varnished teak woodwork is second to none. The 36 is kept in Mystic Shipyard, and received a new diesel in 2013.

The Contest interior is almost identical to the Sweden other than the head, which is a walk thru design.  The V berth forward is also on the small side, but more than workable for a couple, or a couple of kids.  Next is the walk thru head.   The main salon and galley would not at all be out of place on a 40′ yacht, and the beautiful varnished teak woodwork gives a light warm feel to down below.  She has a large owners cabin aft, with a berth that is over 6′ wide and 6’6″ long.   There is lots of hanging locker and cabinet space.
