Our goal is to help give children an appreciation of our marine environment, and teach them a range of skills: Teamwork, Independent Boat Handling, Navigation, and Rowing.

All students should be able to swim (although there is no swimming in our program), and must own and wear a comfortable, high quality Type 3 lifejacket, preferably made by Extrasport.

Safety is all important. Our facility, at Norwalk Cove Marina, is in a safe, family-orientated area. Our boats are all unsinkable, with keels to prevent capsizing. We always have at least one USCG (US Coast Guard) licensed captain on hand.

The Junior Program is a huge success this season with the addition of our two new instructors. We have had a minimum of two boats leaving with five children per boat. The children loved the Island Treasure Hunt and Island Clean-up. All of the children decided it would be a great idea to work together to preserve our precious Norwalk Islands and clean up some of the trash along the shoreline.

We started our junior program to help make sailing more fun for kids. We think sailing should be more than just racing small dinghies around some buoys. Our goal is to help give children an appreciation of our marine environment, and teach them a range of skills from species identification to general seamanship.

Junior Sailing Instructors are at least 17 years old. Every boat will have an instructor aboard at all times, and all our boats have full safety equipment such as first aid kits and VHF radios for emergency contacts.  There are never more than 5 students per boat and per instructor.

Arie B., Martin’s nephew, has run the junior program at Sound Sailing for 3 years. Arie learned at the CPYC Junior program, and is now a college junior in Michigan studying Engineering. He is also rebuilding a Sabre 28, which he is looking forward to going cruising on himself. His infinite patience with the younger set amazes us, and he has also done a great job with adult classes.
